Goodreads description:
On the precipice of her sixteenth birthday, the last thing lone wolf Cat Crawford wants is an extravagant gala thrown by her bubbly stepmother and well-meaning father. So even though Cat knows the family’s trip to Florence, Italy, is a peace offering, she embraces the magical city and all it offers. But when her curiosity leads her to an unusual gypsy tent, she exits . . . right into Renaissance Firenze.

Thrust into the sixteenth century armed with only a backpack full of contraband future items, Cat joins up with her ancestors, the sweet Alessandra and protective Cipriano, and soon falls for the gorgeous aspiring artist Lorenzo. But when the much-older Niccolo starts sniffing around, Cat realizes that an unwanted birthday party is nothing compared to an unwanted suitor full of creeptastic amore. Can she find her way back to modern times before her Italian adventure turns into an Italian forever?

Cover Reveal: Creators by Tiffany Truitt

I'm always a fan of revealing covers for fabulous authors and this one is no exception! I adore this series.  The writing hooked me from book one. When I got the chance to reveal this cover, this was me:

All of these covers have been absolutely gorgeous so I hoped knew that this one would be as well.  And, guess what? Totally is. :)

Goodreads description:
What if the last place you should fall in love is the first place that you do?

You’d think getting sent to Turning Pines Wilderness Camp for a month-long rehabilitation “retreat” and being forced to re-live it in this journal would be the worst thing that’s ever happened to me.

You’d be wrong.

There’s the reason I was sent to Turning Pines in the first place: I got arrested. On prom night. With my two best friends, who I haven’t talked to since and probably never will again. And then there’s the real reason I was sent here. The thing I can’t talk about with the guy I can’t even think about.

What if the moment you’ve closed yourself off is the moment you start to break open?

But there’s this guy here. Ben. And the more I swear he won’t—he can’t—the deeper under my skin he’s getting. After the thing that happened, I promised I’d never fall for another boy’s lies.

And yet I can’t help but wonder…what if?

My Thoughts...
When I read Pretty Amy over a year ago now, I felt like I had found a gem in Ms. Burstein's writing. Amy was perfectly flawed and fun to read about. I was incredibly excited to discover that Cassie would be getting her own story and Ms. Burstein once again delivered on a great premise.

What I Liked:
The writing and character development was once again fantastic. I was excited to have the opportunity to get into Cassie's head and wasn't disappointed at what we discovered there. Cassie is a very dynamic character with her tough-girl, rough-around-the-edges attitude coupled with clear heartbreak over something that she keeps hidden deep. The minor characters in this book were fantastic and I found myself intrigued by each and every one of them.

What Was Disappointing:
Bens's stunt at the end seemed a little over-the-top and perhaps unrealistic. I liked that they got to have this moment, but I felt like it was too easy and not really plausible.

Overall:
I will continue to follow Ms. Burstein's writing quite avidly and the hints of a Ben/Cassie novella make me quite the happy reader. I think this is also one that will consider adding to my library collection (possibly out of my own pocket) because it has that raw, realistic quality to it that my students enjoy.

Ripped away from those she loves most, Tess is heartbroken as her small band of travelers reaches the Isolationist camp in the mysterious and barren Middlelands. Desperate to be reunited with James, the forbidden chosen one who stole her heart, she wants nothing to do with the rough Isolationists, who are without allegiance in the war between the Westerners and Easterners. But having their protection, especially for someone as powerful as Tess, may come at a cost.

When James returns, Tess’s world once again feels complete—until she discovers her sister, Louisa, has taken up her old post at Templeton, the dangerous chosen ones training center and the site of Tess’s loss of innocence. Tess will do anything to protect her loved ones—but will the price be more than she can give?

This second book in Tiffany Truitt’s dystopian series is a thought-provoking, thrilling story that asks who the true enemy really is—the chosen ones who are different, or the naturals…who are just like us.

Cover Reveal: Made of Stars by Kelley York

Last time I did a cover reveal for one of Kelley York's books, I wrote a nice, long paragraph about how much I ADORE her stuff.  I'll save you the gushing this time, but know that I have read all of her books, purchased them for myself and my library, and pimp them out regularly. Every time I find out she has a new book coming out, I do a little dance...

So OF COURSE I am ecstatic to take part in revealing yet another new cover for Ms. York!

OMG ISN'T IT BEAUTIFUL?!?!?!

Publisher: Entangled Teen

Friday Fling! The Next Forever by Lisa Burstein

Photobucket

During Friday Fling , I share with you a "just for fun" romance book or novella that I read and really enjoyed.  It will generally be a "mini review" instead of a full review and I'll stray from my YA focus into the realm of adult romance (which, in case you're curious, is my not-so-guilty pleasure).  These are books that I think are fun, quick (sexy) reads that are definitely worth checking out!

Follow-up novellas tend to be hit or miss for me, but I have to say that this little gem was spot on...

Amy and Joe have known each other for a long time, but it was only at the end of their high school career that their friendship was rekindled and blossomed into something more. Now together in college, Amy and Joe must navigate the uncertainties and difficulties of college life.  Amy must reconcile her new (actually, old) self with the person that she was while hanging out with Lila and Cassie.  Joe is trying to find his own path while holding on to Amy as his anchor.  Will they be able to forge a path forward together?

Told in alternating POVs, The Next Forever offers up both Amy and Joe's perspective on a single college night that proves a turning point for both of them.  For such a short novella, I felt like Lisa really packed it in with this one.  The reader gets a deeper sense of connection to Amy and gets to spend some time in Joe's head.  This was a quick, fun read--a definite MUST for fans of Pretty Amy

As she stumbles through her junior year, the voices get louder, insisting she please the popular group while simultaneously despising them. But when Liv starts hanging around with Spencer, whose own mysterious past also has him on the fringe, life feels complete for the first time in, well, as long as she can remember.

Liv knows the details of the car accident that put her in the coma, but as the voices invade her dreams, and her dreams start feeling like memories, she and Spencer seek out answers. Goodreads description:
Since the car crash that took her father’s life three years ago, Emma’s life has been a freaky — and unending — lesson in caution. Surviving “accidents” has taken priority over being a normal seventeen-year-old, so Emma spends her days taking pictures of life instead of living it. Falling in love with a boy was never part of the plan. Falling for a reaper who makes her chest ache and her head spin? Not an option.

It’s not easy being dead, especially for a reaper in love with a girl fate has put on his list not once, but twice. Finn’s fellow reapers give him hell about spending time with Emma, but Finn couldn’t let her die before, and he’s not about to let her die now. He will protect the girl he loves from the evil he accidentally unleashed, even if it means sacrificing the only thing he has left…his soul.

Lucie Miller is a slightly disorganized physical therapist with a major crush on her fellow doctor--but he doesn't see her. When childhood friend (and childhood crush), Reid Andrews, shows up in her life, he offers her the strangest arrangement she could imagine--let him live with her and get full-time physical therapy and he'll teach her how to get the doctor of her 2.5 kids and a house dreams. She certainly can't say now. What neither of them expect is the sizzling connection that makes its way into their interactions...and into their hearts.

Lucie's disorganization and drive to really help her patients created an instant connection with me (because that's SO me...just not the doctor part). She's insecure and shy until Reid helps her break out of her shell. Reid--*fans self*--is a dreamy fighter with the soul of an artist, which of course seems too good to be true. Their relationship is great because they knew each other growing up so I liked that they could have the kind of instant relationship that allowed attraction to develop quickly. The steamy scenes were top notch and if they're any indication, I'm going to love reading more from Ms. Maxwell. (Fighting for Love, Book One, you say? Give me more!)

At some point it's going to seem like "Friday Fling!" is just my soapbox to talk about my love of Entangled Publishing (and maybe that's true just a little bit), but they honestly put out really great romance reads. Nick and Casey are best friends. Just friends. Nothing but FRIENDS. At least that's what they each spend a significant time convincing themselves. When Nick finally takes a chance and invites Casey into his world as more than a friend, will she be able to handle the consequences? Better yet, will Nick learn to trust that this feisty woman is one tough chick?

I can't remember the last time that I laughed and smiled as much as I did reading Take It Like a Vamp. The main character, Casey, is awesomely fun to get to know. I loved her snark and her real, curvy body and her insecurities and her fierce loyalty and her strength of character.  This chick had it all and I seriously loved her.  Top that off with Nick--the loyal, hot, BFF next door guy--and you've got a friends-to-lovers romance that will knock your socks off. The sizzling chemistry is rounded off with a dash of danger, a fabulous cast of side characters (LOVED Linc and Mason), and a trip to the Greek Islands, creating a fabulous, fast-paced, laugh-out-loud romance novel.  I can't help but hope that Ms. Havens gives us more stories like this (can you say series potential?!). I do believe I'll be heading off in search of more of her books while I wait hopefully for another one like this. :)

Check out this excerpt that I've been lucky enough to get to share with you!!!

Excerpt from All the Broken Pieces:
Olivia reached up, feeling the tender spots on her head. Her fingers brushed across a row of—were those little ridges made of metal?

“Careful. The staples are almost ready to come out, but it’s still going to be sore for a while.”

Staples?! Her stomach rolled. I have staples in my head? She lowered her now-shaking hand. “Can I get a mirror?”

Mom looked at Dad, then back at her. “I don’t think that’s a good idea. Not until you’ve healed a little more.”

Mom patted Olivia’s leg. “You just relax. We’ll be back in a few minutes.”

The two of them left the room, but when Mom swung the door closed, it didn’t latch. Olivia could hear their voices in the hall.

“I still think we should…” She couldn’t make out the rest of Dad’s muffled words. “…know if I can do this.”

“…late for that,” Mom said. “We’d lose everything, including…” Her voice faded as they got farther away. “…have to move.”

Olivia could tell the conversation was tense, but the words were impossible to decipher now. Holding a hand in front of her face, she turned it back and forth. A plastic tube ran from her arm to a machine next to her bed. She peeked into her nightgown and stared in horror at the long red stripe running down her chest.

Sick.

You’re alive. You shouldn’t be thinking about looks.

Lowering her hand, she scanned the room. I wonder how my face looks. From the way Dad stared at me, plus the fact Mom won’t let me see a mirror, it must be bad.

Brains are more important than looks.

That’s what ugly people say.

Olivia put her hands on her head and squeezed. “Stop it,” she whispered to her arguing thoughts, hysteria bubbling up and squeezing the air from her lungs. What was happening to her? Why didn’t she recognize her parents or know where she was? Who she was? Tears ran warm trails down her cheeks. “Just make it all stop.”

Meet Cindi!
Cindi Madsen sits at her computer every chance she gets, plotting revising, and falling in love with her characters. Sometimes it makes her a crazy person. Without it, she’d be even crazier. She has way too many shoes, but can always find a reason to buy a new pretty pair, especially if they’re sparkly, colorful, or super tall. She loves music, dancing, and wishes summer lasted all year long. She lives in Colorado (where summer is most definitely NOT all year long) with her husband and three children.

Friday Fling featuring Try Me by @dianealberts!

Photobucket

During Friday Fling , I share with you a "just for fun" romance book or novella that I read and really enjoyed.  It will generally be a "mini review" instead of a full review and I'll often stray from my YA focus into the realm of adult romance (which, in case you're curious, is my not-so-guilty pleasure).  These are books that I think are fun, quick reads that are definitely worth checking out!

Diane Alberts has quickly climbed the charts of my personal favorite romance writers.  Her stories are full of the passion, romance, and good writing that I expect when I pick up a romance novel or novella.  She makes you give a damn about her characters from the very beginning.  She's earned a place on my "instant buy" when her new stuff comes out (or at the very least my "buy this as soon as you have money" list). I've already reviewed a couple of her books on "Friday Fling!":

Here's the cool thing:

Today's "Friday Fling!" features book is her most recent release from Entangled Publishing's Ever Afters line.  Diane is having an awesome contest to promote the book.  Help us get it into the Top 100 on Amazon or B&N by the end of June and enter for your chance to win a free e-reader OR a signed poster of Jeremy's abs the book cover. :)

When Sgt. Jeremy Addison wakes up bloody and bruised in the Nevada desert, it's pretty obvious that Las Vegas was a terrible idea. And to make matters worse, his ex-best friend's little sister, the girl he's loved forever, is the one to find him on the side of the road.  Erika couldn't be more surprised to find Jeremy beaten up and wandering in the desert. The two have a history and fate seems determined to give  them a second chance.  Can Erika open up to the possibility and take a chance on Jeremy?

I could easily sum this book up as follows: "Jeremy is awesome. And sexy. The End." :) Diane has a true gift for crafting characters that steal your heart within seconds of meeting them.  They worm their way into your mind and take up residence there while you read their story.  Jeremy and Erika are no exception.  Jeremy is a Marine taking his leave time in Las Vegas when a drunken bar fight leaves him stranded in the desert and then being nursed back to health by none other than the girl he's loved forever.  He's obviously wary, however, because last time he saw he, he told her he loved her and she ran away.  Erika's got her own baggage--the kinds of scars that have scared men away in the past--and she's not really ready to open up to anyone yet, especially Jeremy.  Their chemistry is electric from the moment they're together. They're both dealing with low self-worth and I think that makes their path toward each other a more beautiful story where each one learns to see through the others' eyes. Definitely a romance novella worth every penny and moment of your time.

So, I haven't done a random personal giveaway in awhile, and I've decided to take this opportunity to do so and show my support of an author that I greatly enjoy!  So here's what's up!

One lucky winner/entrant will be gifted two (2) e-books by me! I'll "gift" you e-book copies of Try Me and one of the other books I've reviews by Diane (On One Condition or Divinely Ruined) from either Barnes & Noble or Amazon.com (Or if you already own Try Me or want to buy/read it OMG RIGHT NOW, I'll buy you the other two, kk?).  All three are fabulous books. This is the first time I'll be giving away adult books instead of YA, lol, so I hope y'all are excited!

One thing before you enter: you must be 18 to win. It's not that I totally don't support teens reading romance novels. Heck, I was reading Danielle Steele novels from the library at the impressionable age of 12.  However, due to the adult content of these novels, I'm going to say that I will only give them to adults--I don't want parents coming after me!

So...if you're 18--enter away!!!

@EntangledPub's Newest Line: Dead Sexy!

So, I don't do a lot of what I consider straight up "marketing" posts here on Reading in the Corner, but when I'm really attached to something, I'll consider it. Today is one of those times.Entangled Publishing launched in 2011 and since then I believe I have read 24 (I had to go count!) of their titles and have yet not to thoroughly enjoy one. I credit them entirely with my newest addiction to romance novellas (who knew they could be so awesome?).

If you haven't read any Entangled books, I HIGHLY recommend that you do.  Whether you're an adult romance reader or a YA reader, they have really fabulous titles.  I'm really excited about their newest line: Dead Sexy.  Tell me that doesn't just sound like it's going to be awesome--yay for romantic suspense! Here's what they've got coming up:

Her Forgotten Betrayal by Anna DeStefano

Remembering will save her life. But will the truth destroy their love forever?
When the CEO of a global technology empire retreats to her ancestral mountain home to heal from a brutal shooting, she discovers the danger has just begun. The FBI suspects her of selling top-secret government research, and has sent an undercover agent to find evidence of her treason. Still suffering from amnesia, she is at the mercy of nightmares that soon morph into something much more terrifying—a determined enemy, plotting to make sure she never regains her fragile memory. When a handsome stranger sweeps in from the cold, claiming to be her protector—and her former lover—she suspects he’s not telling her the whole truth about his sudden appearance on the mountain. As their unwilling attraction blossoms to sizzling passion, she begins to trust him…unaware that he is about to repeat the most painful betrayal of her past—a past she doesn’t remember…a past that just may kill her.

No Hero by Mallory Kane

A darkly handsome New Orleans detective who insists he’s no hero is blindsided by his one-time lover, a sexy investigative TV reporter, who exposes his secret troubled past to the whole world…and nearly costs him his job. When the at-risk teens he mentors start turning up dead, his vow to protect the other kids hits a major snag…his only clue to finding the determined killer is held by the one woman he never wants to see again. Compelled to work together to solve the vicious murders before another child dies, their passion reluctantly reignites, and their mutual mistrust slowly turns to respect as she realizes there’s much more to being a hero than outward appearances, and his deeply wounded heart gradually opens to the possibility of love.

Sacrifice of Passion by Melissa Bourbon Ramirez

A tall, dark, single-dad Texas rancher finds himself facing more than his stubbornly silent son when the chupacabra, a supposedly mythical blood-sucking beast, starts killing his livestock—and stalking the town’s newly returned veterinary assistant, the sensual woman who ran from the altar and broke his heart twelve years earlier. Determined to purge his sizzling memories of her from his all-too-vivid imagination, he seeks her help to get to the bottom of the disturbing animal mutilations, only to have her break through to his sullen son…and rekindle the love he’d thought was lost forever. But her refusal to share a terrible secret sends her running straight into the lair of the chupacabra, plunging her back into her worst nightmare, and forcing them both to confront the wrongs of the past—in order to stay alive for the future they desperately want.

Deadly Secrets, Loving Lies, by Cynthia Cooke

Family secrets must be kept, and painful wounds must be ignored.
After an all-out assault by a vicious terrorist bent on destroying her entire family, a former government agent must break the strict rules she has always lived by when she emerges from hiding to reluctantly accept the help of her all-too-sexy ex-lover. Running a deadly race against time, they rush to rescue her kidnapped sister, find her missing father, and bring the notorious villain to justice. But nothing ever goes as planned. Bullets fly, danger abounds, and their passion reignites even faster than the lies are flowing. But their stubbornly held secrets just might spell the end of their rekindled love and hopes for the future…as well as their very lives.
