Review + Giveaway: Naturals by Tiffany Truitt

Release Date: 2 April 2013
Publisher: Entangled Teen
Format: eARC
Source: Publisher

Grab the first book, Chosen Ones, or Naturals for only $4.99 for your Kindle!
Ripped away from those she loves most, Tess is heartbroken as her small band of travelers reaches the Isolationist camp in the mysterious and barren Middlelands. Desperate to be reunited with James, the forbidden chosen one who stole her heart, she wants nothing to do with the rough Isolationists, who are without allegiance in the war between the Westerners and Easterners. But having their protection, especially for someone as powerful as Tess, may come at a cost.

When James returns, Tess’s world once again feels complete—until she discovers her sister, Louisa, has taken up her old post at Templeton, the dangerous chosen ones training center and the site of Tess’s loss of innocence. Tess will do anything to protect her loved ones—but will the price be more than she can give?

This second book in Tiffany Truitt’s dystopian series is a thought-provoking, thrilling story that asks who the true enemy really is—the chosen ones who are different, or the naturals…who are just like us.

Fierce Reads Event Recap!

When I first started blogging and really taking a renewed interest in the book community, I was often disheartened at the number of book/author events that happened elsewhere (especially when they were in Chicago and therefore closer to where I grew up than where I currently live). It seemed like St. Louis and Kansas City, both of which at about 2 hours from where I live, nevertheless seemed to draw YA authors. Then, magically, Ally Condie came to St. Louis courtesy of the plibrary and Puddnhead Books. That event was almost a year ago now and since then I've had the pleasure of attended three more events, including Lauren Oliver, HarperCollins' Dark Days of Summear, and now the fabulous FIERCE READS tour. Despite the stress and business of a new job and my final semester of my MA program, I knew that with such a fabulous 5 author line-up I couldn't miss this event and I'm so glad that I made the trip! The evening's line-up features Ann Aguirre, Jessica Brody, Elizabeth Fama, Lish McBride, and Marissa Meyer. How could you NOT want to attend that event?! I had the chance to chat with the ladies a little before the event and I have to say that they were fabulous. They make me want a third job with a publisher just touring with authors. (And can you identify the author who "doesn't belong" in the picture?)

Moving on to the actual event, the Audience asked some great questions and I will try to distill for you some of my favorite answers, tidbits, and random facts. (And I apologize for the poor quality pictures as my camera died right before the event and without spare batteries in tow--silly me--I had to resort to the iPad camera).

You really do learn the most interesting things at these author events.  For example, Ann started off the discussion talking about why she loves writing YA so much now that she's moved to writing for the age group.  She said the cross-genre possibilities are awesome but the best part is really the uncensored, enthusiastic fan-mail that comes from young readers. She says, "I really want to be an annoying 12 year old forever." Marissa Meyer talked a little about her fan-fic and short story background and it was really interesting to find out that the initial idea for the Lunar chronicles was inspired by a short story that she wrote at a young age about a futuristic, science fiction version of "Puss in Boots." Jessica Brody got the initial idea for 52 Reasons when watching a meter reader write a ticket and thinking "Wouldn't it be cool to be a meter reader for, like, a day?" Beyond that, she thought carefully about how to turn this idea into a "fish out of water story" with a character who would change the most throughout the course of the story and present the most comedy. Elizabeth Fama wrote Monstrous Beauty as a dare from her YA-age kids and they worked the outline out together on morning runs! (How fun!)  Lish set out to write a story about the nice guy because while badasses are awesome, that's not really the kind of guy that most of us spend out high school lives with.

I could spend a long time telling you about all of their awesome answers to the audience questions that spanned everything from the hardest part of writing to marketing a current projects.  I will leave you with this: none of them think that "writer's block" is a real thing!  Their advice to all of those aspiring writers out there is that you have to push through it!  If you feel like you're stuck, then there's something that needs changed or cut.  Step back (or away), think about it, and then come back and keep going.  Writing is a job if you want to make money at it. My favorite quote (as an educator) was probably this: "Teacher's aren't allowed to get teaching block, and then sit at their desks all day because they just don't feel inspired today."  So writer friends, go forth and write!

Thanks to the absolutely fabulous people being the Fierce Reads tour I have an AMAZING giveaway for you today!  Take a look at the awesomeness that's up for grabs...

The Dream Slayer Tour: Character Interview & E-Book Giveaway!

Today I have the pleasure of hosting an interview with Natalie and Tristan from The Dream Slayer! They're super fun so I hope you'll take a gander and read all the way down for a great e-book giveaway!

Welcome to Reading in the Corner, Natalie and Tristan! It's so great to have you both here today. :) Let's start with the basics--can you tell us a little bit about yourselves?
Natalie: Thanks for having us here! It's so much fun to do something different! I'm Natalie, I'm 17. I live with parents and have an older married sister, who I sometimes see. Soon I'm going to be an aunty! Next year is my last of high school.
Tristan: Score! This school thing is way more work than I was promised on that first day of Kindergarten.
Natalie: *giggle* You thought your mother was waiting right outside.
Tristan: Hey, that was supposed to be our secret….I'm Tristan Miller. I'm 17 and I live a few streets from Nat with my parents and our dog, Corky. I have a brother who moved to the big city of Burlington Vermont. He has a job on the news as an anchor or something like that. Hard to know more since he won't return our calls.
Natalie: I call him stinky Rick face.
Tristan: It's nicer than what I call him.
How long have you been friends? How did you meet?
Tristan: Since as far back as I can remember.
Natalie: We met as babies at the park. Tristan followed me around with his shovel and we played in the sandbox. I was just starting to walk so I guess we were around one.
Tristan: Hilarity and naptime ensued ever since. Except we stopped taking naps together by the time we were three.
Natalie: Otherwise it'd be creepy. We've been in classes together and every summer we'd play and do something every day.
Tristan: *smiles* Some things never change.
What do you like to do for fun?
Tristan: I have a popular school blog. Other than that, the normal stuff. Movies, TV. Youtube is a great school work distraction.
Natalie: I love videos with kittens. Too bad my parents still have dial up.
Tristan: I don't even know how that's possible.
What about you, Natalie?
Natalie: I love to read and sometimes I write poetry and short stories sometimes. When we're together we love to get coffee at the Magic Bean, go to the movies, or just hang out at Tristan's house. Oh, and I daydream *knowing smile*.
What's one random fact about you?
Natalie: I still sleep with my teddy bear from when I was a baby. And I have a pet hamster named Plucky because I wanted him to be a bird instead.
Tristan: Hey, you cheated. That's two!
Natalie: *giggle* Oops!
Tristan: One random fact about me is I can whistle out my nose the Mission Impossible theme while drinking milks.
Natalie: He's making that up.
Tristan: Hey, get me a glass of milk and I'll prove it.
What makes you unique?
Natalie: Oh, nothing really except my dreams created a thinking, breathing, alternate dimension parallel to ours.
Tristan: And I'm supposed to follow that how?
Natalie: *shrugs*
Tristan: I have the uncanny ability to sense danger and run in the opposite direction.
If you could do anything after you finish high school, what would it be?
Tristan: I want to go to college and become an investigative reporter that travels the globe. But first I'd like to backpack across Europe.
Natalie: That sounds fun.
Tristan: You can come with me.
Natalie: *smile* I really just want to get through high school without dying! After that I'd love to open a boutique or something downtown. I love downtown.
What's it like living in Meadow Creek?
Natalie: We're really close to ski country, so during the winter I love the rush of people visiting. In the summer, there are some hikers and a lot of shops and restaurants close up, but it feels more intimate. We know everyone and can do normal, everyday stuff without the crowds.
Tristan: What she's trying to say is that it's dull.
Natalie: That's not true. I love it here. The mountains are gorgeous and we can go hiking whenever we want.
Tristan: Except we never do.
Natalie: Yeah, but we *could*.
Has it always been so weird?
Tristan: I want to say no, but the people that live here are eccentric and strange.
Natalie: That's why he lives here *smirk*
Tristan: I think maybe people are drawn to here. When we were kids we used to think that the circus clowns were possessed and we ended up stranded in a tent.
Natalie: Mr. Buckle rescued us.
Tristan: Right, which just proves, that yes, it is always been strange. That or I have an active imagination. Your guess is as good as mine.
Natalie, let's talk just a little about your dreams. Can you tell us a little about them?
Natalie: Like everyone else, when I dream sometimes I'm someone else. I'm taller, my hair is blond instead of brown and I have these crazy adventures and I always save the day. Sometimes they're campy, but they're always fun. I had no idea they were more than dreams until some of the dreams began to um, manifest in town.
Tristan: It sounds creepier every time I hear you talk about it.
When did they start?
Natalie: I don't remember exactly when. I think I've always dreamt of her, even when I was little. I remember being 10 and dreaming I was blond, just like my older sister. But it was 2 years ago where in my dreams I became the slayer and I met Damien.
Tristan: Oh, yay, we're talking about him now?
Natalie: Just for a second, I'm done now.
And Tristan, has Natalie ever talked to you about her dreams?
Tristan: Only once stuff started getting tough. Now, yeah we've talked about it some. At first I admit I was really freaked out. Another dimension where we all exist and have lives different from this one? It's like having a twin that's you, and you have no control over them. But then I realized it was kind of cool that another me was living in this world and he has a pretty cool life. I mean, I do. I mean…
Natalie: It'll get easier the more you talk about it.
What are your thoughts on her dreams?
Tristan: It's hard to put my thoughts into words. I always thought Natalie was amazing and always felt like I was the only one who knew, you know? Oh , no offense, Nat… Now our friends know she's amazing and I have to share her. What happens in our dreams affects us and vice versa. Imagine if that got out?
Natalie: People would freak.
Tristan: There would definitely be freaking.

One Year Blogoversary!

It's been just over a year since I posted my first review here on Reading in the Corner! (2/11/11) The blog and my style has changed a lot since then! I never even dreamed that I would really, REALLY do this and love it as much as I do.  I never imagined that I would actually get a (fabulous) custom blog design. And I definitely didn't think that I'd be able to do it consistently for a whole YEAR. As a previously failed blogger (when talking about general "life" things and another about cooking), I really didn't have high hopes that I would find/maintain the motivation to do this for real.  I think that the community itself has probably been the biggest sustaining force for me this time. It's really incredible how many fabulous people that I've met.

Anyway, I decided that I would try to do a couple of small giveaways for this event, even though money things are fairly tight right now.  I just love you all so much! :)

NOTE: If the Rafflecopter forms are not showing up, trying using one of the links (such as the Enter to Win) and it *should* pop up. (It did for me.)

First giveaway: I went to a signing in St. Louis with Ally Condie back in November and I bought and had signed a beautiful paperback copy of Matched just for you! The paperback cover really is beautiful. I almost want to keep it for myself but I got the hardcover personalized to match Crossed...

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Second giveaway: I have a couple of ARCs sitting around that I would like to give away! I'll give 2 winners a choice of one of these ARCs. (I'll try to get a real picture of them in here later tonight) My ARC of Shatter Me is from before it had a cover (hence the image below), but I promise that the content inside is just as fabulous!

Speak by Laurie Halse Anderson
Platinum Edition, 2006
Since the beginning of the school year, high school freshman Melinda has found that it's been getting harder and harder for her to speak out loud: "My throat is always sore, my lips raw.... Every time I try to talk to my parents or a teacher, I sputter or freeze.... It's like I have some kind of spastic laryngitis." What could have caused Melinda to suddenly fall mute? Could it be due to the fact that no one at school is speaking to her because she called the cops and got everyone busted at the seniors' big end-of-summer party? Or maybe it's because her parents' only form of communication is Post-It notes written on their way out the door to their nine-to-whenever jobs. While Melinda is bothered by these things, deep down she knows the real reason why she's been struck mute: Andy Evans. He's a senior at Melinda's high school, and Melinda hasn't been able to speak clearly since the Incident with him at the senior party last August.

I picked Speak for a number of reasons. First, this book is incredible and if you haven't read it, well, you should! Second, this book was recently challenged in Missouri (the state I live it) and my children's literature class spent some time following the debates surrounding the challenge. Ms. Anderson's response was incredible. Dr. Scroggins said that the book did not belong in the school because it is pornographic. I dare you to read this book through and tell me that this book is pornographic. This book is anything but that. It's beautiful and painful and something that many, many teens should/need to read.

Some articles of interest from that incident:
Blog post from ALA's OIF
Official complaint filed by Dr. Scroggins (Speak mentioned on p5)
Laurie Halse Anderson's response (AWESOME)

Both Dr. Scroggins and Ms. Anderson wrote opinion pieces for the News-Leader, but neither is available on the website any longer. Along with Speak, other books that were challenged at the same time included Sherman Alexie's The Absolutely True Diary of a Part-Time Indian and Sarah Ockler's Twenty Boy Summer.

Goodreads description:

Rebekkah Barrow never forgot the tender attention her grandmother, Maylene, bestowed upon the dead of Claysville, the town where Bek spent her adolescence. There wasn't a funeral that Maylene didn't attend, and at each Rebekkah watched as Maylene performed the same unusual ritual: three sips from a small silver flask followed by the words "Sleep well, and stay where I put you."

Now Maylene is dead and Bek must go back to the place--and the man--she left a decade ago. But what she soon discovers is that Maylene was murdered and that there was good reason for her odd traditions. It turns out that in placid Claysville, the worlds of the living and the dead are dangerously connected. Beneath the town lies a shadowy, lawless land ruled by the enigmatic Charles, aka Mr. D--a place from which the dead will return if their graves are not properly minded. Only the Graveminder, a Barrow woman, and the current Undertaker, Byron, can set things to right once the dead begin to walk...
Thoughts, Musings, Ramblings...

I think that Charlaine Harris hit the nail on the head when she said "No one builds worlds like Melissa Marr." (Quote on the front cover, in case you're curious)  Marr really sucked me into this small town world with all its quirkiness and creepiness.  If you liked the Wicked Lovely series for Marr's writing style and world building, then this book won't disappear.  However, don't go looking for any fey here--this world if of a completely different nature.  The magic is dark, hidden, and dangerous.

The story is told from the alternating POVs of multiple townspeople, both living and dead. Each one gives you just enough information to keep the story moving and clue you in just a little more.  It also added an extra layer to the intrigue and depth to the characters.  The protag, Rebekkah (or Bek), is a strong young woman who, while she wasn't born in Claysville, has always felt and resisted the pull of the town--until her grandmother dies and she is forced to return.  Her evolution as a characters is the most profound as she goes from resisting to acceptance.  She's never been one to tie herself down, whether to a place or a person, and it's very interesting to watch her emotional evolution as she begins to accept her place in Claysville and Byron's place in her life.

There is so much more to explore in this book!  First, the world of the dead and its cast of characters are so intriguing and I can't wait to read more about them.  Charlie, Alicia...*sigh* so much more I want to know.  Second, the Bek-Byron connection and their history (...and future as Graveminder and Undertaker).  After I finished this book, I immediately went stalking searching to find out if this would be a series.  Thankfully, while Marr meant for it to be a standalone novel, there will be a book 2 (YAY).

As a side note, while this book is technically an adult read, I think it would definitely has teen appeal.  There is one very short bedroom scene, but nothing comes of it and I'm pretty sure I've seen more in PG-13 movies.  As a librarian, I probably would reserve it as a recommendation for older teens because of that scene, but other than that, it's got mystery, romance, zombies, and quick pacing--all things I could see a teen enjoying.

Now, on to the really fun stuff before I give anything away...
